The Hidden pounds we just don't see.

This months article deals with adding pounds to our rigs. As last months article stated, both the gals and the guys are remiss when realizing just what adds weight. I will start with the guys and the hidden pounds they add. How many of you have added a solar panel, extra batteries, inverter, dish, catalytic heater, bicycle rack, bicycles, outdoor rug, awnings, etc? Guess what? The weight these items represent are not include in the GVW. If you subscribe to an RV catalog that offers shipping, take the time to jot down the shipping weight of everything you have added to your rig. You may be surprised with the added weight. Don't forget your extra power cords, water hoses, and all the stuff you need to set up camp. Anything that you physically carry on or in the rig counts.

OK ladies, you're next. How many extra appliance do you need to make life comfortable? Coffee pot, separate microwave, toaster, crock pot, hair dryer, curling iron, etc. How many skillets, pots, pans, baking pans, casseroles, dishes, glasses, silverware and serving dishes are on board? Are you carrying canned goods to get you to the next stop or enough to get through the next winter.

Next is a shared thing. Most of us have an electric heater, fan, TV, maybe a portable cd or tape player. How about the rugs to cover the cold floor? Bedding, towels, clothing. Lots of us carry a laptop nowadays. What about that special drink or food that we just know they won't have at our destination, nor along the way. Lots of us only drink bottled water.

This is all stuff we can't imagine leaving behind, and we don't have to. But, we must take stock of what we need and what we want. If the weight of the stuff you take on the road does not overload your tires, congratulations! However, most of us could take a long, hard look at what we cram inside our rigs. Look on it as an 'enlightening' experience as well as doing your rig and tow vehicle a favor.

Hattie

This is for those of you that use the in-line hose connected water filter for the fresh water supply when hooked up in the campground.

Your purpose in purchasing these filters was to trap undesirable tastes and bugs before they entered your drinking water supply. Well! Did you know that after using your filter, if you just drain it and stow it with the water hoses you have invited trouble in. A cool damp dark place is the perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria to grow. There lies your filter growing green things inside while you travel.

The simple solution to this problem is to just store the filter element in your freezer. No growing things will bother you after this. Remember to drain most of the water out first.

Here’s to your continued good health.
