Where We Have Been
The 2004 - 2005 Season
October in Kingman
What a nice way to kick off our camping season. Thirteen rigs met at the Kingman KOA on a Tuesday evening the second week of October. The first item of business after settling in was to move to the "Dambar Steakhouse" for a dinner befitting the southwest. Steaks, chops, shrimp and lots more graced our tables.
Wednesday
morning called for tours of the several museums in downtown Kingman. The
Mohave County museum contains lots of historical materials related to
the mining once prevalent in the area. The old Powerhouse Museum
contains artifacts and history of Route 66.
KOA provided a rec room for our use and we made good use of the facilities with the evening group meals. Based on Shirley’s Famous Chilli, there were plenty of go-withs for everybody to have their fill and do it all over again on Thursday evening!
Thursday involved a trek to the "ghost" town of
Oatman. Wild burros walk the streets all day begging for food.
Fortunately every
shop
along the street sells bags of carrots to feed the wiley animals. The
twisty section of Route 66 that leads to town from Kingman provides a
white knuckle experience for the timid mountain driver.
Friday brought an early rise and a call to travel the opposite direction on the "Mother Road". About 65 miles east to Grand Cavern Caverns. Our hosts had arranged for a guided group tour of this huge cave. After an elevator ride down some 10 stories, the cave spilled out in chamber after chamber of eye candy. Two new member couples joined us for their first club camping experience. The Kirwans and the Wallaces were reported to have enjoyed the experience and plan to join us again very soon.
