Where We Have Been
The 2004 - 2005 Season
May at Bill Williams Mountain
Williams, AZ
With the temperatures starting to bounce off the 100
mark and the Valley of the Sun so dry that hundreds of acres of brush
land have already burned, we gather together in the mountains near
Williams, Arizona. The plan was originally to dry-camp in the open
forest near a "dry lake bed". However, somehow Nature has a method of
changing our plans. The dry area selected had just emerged from the
winter snow pack and was too damp and soft to support a trailer. The
destination was quickly moved to Dogtown Lake Camp ground close by. Here
we were able to access a supply of water and also a dump station.
Dale and Phoebe Rodgers hosted this event and saw to it that everybody en-route was notified of the change of destination. This recently improved camp ground was just fine. Our group was essentially the only occupants this early in the season. Over-night temperatures fell to the low 30’s and made each of us thankful that we live in a state with so much diversity.
While in the area we visited Williams to browse the gift shops, enjoy pie and coffee at the Pine Country Café, and to have a great breakfast at Old Smokey’s Pancake House.
A contract work crew was working in the campground daily, thinning the forest and chipping the small trees and slash. They knocked off work at 2:00 p.m. However, they started their day at 6:30 a.m. They were not quiet running their equipment. Their work did vastly improve the appearance of the area and reduce the chance of forest fire.
Since
this park includes a lake, there were fresh caught trout available for
the almost daily pot-luck dinner. Camping with this club will never let
you go hungry.
All too soon it was time to pull out and return to real life. A pleasant ending to our camping season. We look forward to meeting again once the weather cools and many of our members return from other parts of the country. Until October, we wish each of you a safe and enjoyable summer. Happy camping.
