Our base of operations was the Gilbert Ray Park. Part of the Pima County Parks system. Very nice park with electricity at all sites and water close by. Our atenders were the Kirwans who were the hosts for the event. Fullers, Diefenbachers, Rodgers, Spigners, Fishers and one of our newest members, Gloria Howard.
As usual, the first day involved arriving, setting up, getting acquainted and visiting with the members. Exploring the park facilities and seeing the awesome view of the southwest at night.
Wednesday morning, we started the day at the Arizona-Sonora
Desert Museum.
This interesting area contains the usual plants and
trees that you would expect in a desert museum. However, it includes
most every species of birds and animals found in the Sonora Desert.
The live animals range from the Mexican bats, through the prairie
dogs, lions, bear and otters, right through to the hummingbird
exhibit.
It is hard to see all that there is in the area in just one day. And we had the evening pot-luck to prepare for. Expect to schedule a return trip sometime at another outing in Pima County.
The pot-luck was held in a pleasant ramada and included Chris Kelly, a new member who day-tripped out for the meal and to meet the group, and Randy Wasser, a friend of Gloria’s. With the main dishes of your own, there were veggies, salads, cake and pie. Plenty of good food. Pretty much the expected group meal for this club.
Thursday started a bit later. Didn’t have to hurry to get a
parking place as you do at the Desert Museum. Thursday we visited
the "Old Tucson Movie Studios and
Park".
Our tour guide knew his western movie lore and was very good at
pointing out the camera locations on several great western movies.
He even had some of those little goofs in mind that bring to your
attention things to look for the next time one of these movies is on
the TV. Like a wristwatch on John Wayne, or a car on a hill behind
Clint Eastwood. All things that were not yet invented at the time
frame of the movie story
