Where We Have Been
The 2004 - 2005 Season
April in Tubac
The name "Tubac" comes from the Pima Indian word for "smelly waters". There were no smelly waters any where near our camp. We enjoyed the campground of the Flying W Ranch just across the Santa Cruz River from downtown Tubac. The campground is a quite secluded, yet subtly charming site. Several camp sites available with most having hookups. The owner, Jiff, greeted us as we arrived and made sure we were nicely situated.
Old Tubac sports a nice restaurant of the same name. We visited it our first night and many brought home white boxes for later. Our campers included: The Fletchers who were the wagonmasters, Mentons, Spigners, Kaufmans, Fishers, Rodgers & Gillespies.
By the first full day in town we were ready to "see the sights" and shop until... We first visited the Presidio, the remains of the outpost from the early 1800’s.
Took this morning opportunity to do some shopping in Old Town Tubac and to see some of the craftsman made articles available for purchase.
Furthur shopping had to take place in the many arts shops of town right up until it was time to set up for the group meal. Jiff provided a mesquite fired grill for our meat products and we each brought a dish to share. Rosie & Eddy Kirwan day-tripped from Marana to join us for the evening meal.
Following dinner, Jiff entertained us with a wide repertoire of songs while we enjoyed the regular beautiful sunset. Later, around the campfire, Jiff was joined by her husband, Danny, with guitars in hand, for even more songs and stories.
The next day we visited the Tumacacori Mission, Santa Cruz Chili Factory, enjoyed a nice lunch at Wisdom's restaurant and even managed to hold a brief club meeting to discuss plans for the next season. A planning committee was established to bring some clear suggestions to the May meeting for finalization and selection of wagonmasters. Specific plans were announced for the May camp out in Williams. (See page 1). The Fletchers were congratulated for hosting such a memorable outing this time.
